China Postgraduate Network Minimize

Introduction

The China Postgraduate Network (CPN) provides a space for the growing number of postgraduates, young scholars and research fellows involved in all aspects of Chinese Studies in UK universities. This space can be used in a variety of ways: as a place to share information, arrange meetings, pursue avenues of research, offer accomodation for postgraduates doing research away from their universities, and provide support for projects from conferences to fieldwork. The network relies entirely on you, the postgraduate community of the UK. As convenor, I actively encourage you to use the facilities on this website, and hope that the CPN will become one of your first ports of call for information and advice, as well as allowing you to make contacts with people working in your field.

The CPN is affiliated to the British Association of Chinese Studies (BACS), which is a non-political organisation with a membership of over 200 individuals, whose interests relate to greater China, drawn mainly from the academic community but also from industry, the media and government. Details of its activites, including information on funding opportunities and its annual conference can be found at http://www.bacsuk.org.uk/index.html
CPN has support from the British Inter-university China Centre, which has kindly agreed to host its web pages.

CFP AAS/ICAS 2011Panel "Imagining World Orders from Asia"
We are looking for papers and discussants/chair to join a panel comparing different Asian ideas of world order, world system and world view. Examples may be religious ideas of world division (such as Dar al-Islam/Dar al-Harb), modernist state-based concepts (such as world systems theory), historically based concepts (such as the Chinese All-under-heaven, Tianxia), etc. How do these various world views order the world in terms of time, space, self/other, ethics, etc.? How do they relate to each other, and to the nation-state system? Can and ought specific Asian imaginations of world order work to subvert other (dominant?) imaginings? Do these approaches have points in common in terms of being “Asian”? What are the practical implications of such imaginings? In discussing these questions, the panel aims to bring together scholars from inside and outside Asia, as well as from different theoretical and epistemological backgrounds. For more information or ideas on the specific panel, please contact astrid.nordin[at]postgrad.manchester.ac.uk, or Linsay.Cunningham[at]postgrad.manchester.ac.uk.
